Structure of Cooling Towers (CT) and Chillers
The fan draws in outside air and directs it through the fill media, where it contacts the cooling water and expels the heated air outside. The fill media, also called the heat exchanger, consists of thin sheets stacked together in open-type systems. In closed systems, copper coils are used through which cooling water circulates. Additionally, the upper water tank in open systems allows the cooling water to fall onto the fill media, while in closed systems, the water falls onto the heat exchange coils.
The structure of a vapor-compression refrigeration system
On the other hand, the structure of a refrigeration system also consists of several key components. In the vapor-compression system, the main parts are the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.
The compressor
The compressor is the part that applies pressure to the gaseous refrigerant, making it easier to condense. It transforms the low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas into a high-temperature, high-pressure gas.
The condenser
The condenser is the part that contains the refrigerant gas compressed by the compressor. It releases the heat from the refrigerant to the cooling water, warming the water. This warmed water then becomes the inlet water temperature for the cooling tower and is sent to the cooling tower.
Expansion Valve (Compression Mechanism)
The expansion valve is the component that reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant sent from the condenser. As the pressure decreases, the refrigerant expands, causing its temperature to drop.
Evaporator: The evaporator is the component that absorbs heat. It transfers the heat from the cold water to the refrigerant. As a result, the cold water flows to the air conditioning system, while the refrigerant becomes low-temperature and low-pressure, circulating back to the compressor.
Summary
Cooling towers (CT) and chillers are essential in air conditioning systems, with the chiller often referred to as the “main unit” and the CT as the “auxiliary unit.” They work closely together, but it’s crucial to choose the right CT and chiller for the specific environment, ensuring noise and safety concerns are addressed. If you’re unsure which CT or chiller to install, it’s recommended to consult with the manufacturer.
